Our Mission
Preserving yesterdays history today for tomorrow
The 2nd U.S. Cavalry was known as "Montana's Battalion" and its units were nicknamed "The Lost Tribes of the 2nd". This is due to the fact that they were stationed in Montana and the Northwest on what was to be a 3 year stint, but they wound up being "banished" from civilization for over 18 years.
The 2nd U.S. Cavalry Association is a living history organization dedicated to the preservation of the customs, ceremonies, living conditions, lifestyle and manner of military dress of the Montana Cavalry trooper form 1865 to 1901. We encourage the the study, research and instruction of Cavalry life in a living history format to assure the continued remembrance of our proud Montana military heritage. We are registered with the State of Montana as a non-profit educational military veterans organization - but you do not need to be a veteran to join.
We encourage learning about history through the five senses: by seeing a saber salute, hearing a pistol/carbine fired, touching an antique of the past, smelling the food cooking, the black powder fired, the oiled leather of a Cavalry camp and tasting a piece of the troopers meal of hard tack.
If you have ever wondered what it would be like to participate in a thundering Cavalry charge, fire in a Cavalry skirmish line or just sit around the campfire talking about the old days, the 2nd Cavalry has a place for you. Troops are forming now, so enlist TODAY!
